Identifying and assisting lower back pain

Lower back painThere are a lot of different reasons why a person suffers from lower back pain, but it is not a death sentence by any stretch of the imagination. Lower back pain can be relieved, and in many cases completely cured with or without surgical procedures. Most people can be helped without any sort of major intrusive surgery, and can live productive lives free of lower back pain. Whether it’s an unexpected fall, a strained muscle, or a slipped or herniated disk, there are many factors to consider in regards to identifying lower back pain and helping relieve it over time.

Heating padFirst and foremost, the best position for relief when your back hurts is to lie on your back on the floor with pillows under your knees, your hips and knees bent and your feet on a chair or just with your hips and knees bent. This type of relative release may need to be done several times in the span of a couple of days so that you can feel longer prolonged relief. Even if it hurts, you should walk around for a few minutes every hour to help keep your muscles strong in the lower back. If you’re not too keen on laying on your floor, you could try and use heating pads that can help relax muscle spasms. Use heating pads or apply heat for twenty to thirty minutes at a time. This will ease the pain for upwards of several hours sometimes. In conjunction with heat, you might also try to use ice packs to help numb the pain away, and if all else fails you could also get a massage to nullify the pain. When all else fails, you could try nonprescription medicines such as aspirin, acetaminophen, naproxen or ibuprofen, these of course being analgesics.

Lower back pain could be far worse than simple strains or falls. If you have pain below the knee, or your legs, feet, or groin area feel numb, you need to call a doctor. Furthermore if you have fever, nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain, weakness or sweating, you need to make sure you call a physician. These are signs of more serious back injuries.

SwimmingIn regards to further lower back pain relief, you could visit a chiropractor. Some back pain can be derivative of neck pain or your alignment out of sorts. A chiropractor can mend your back by adjusting things and causing pain relief in a non-surgical environment. While many medical professionals do not recommend chiropractic services, you can’t argue with the millions of people that have avoided back surgery by visiting a chiropractor in their area.

Lastly, the best thing to do in regards to back pain is to prevent it. You can prevent it by strengthening your muscles in the back. These can be as easy as raising your knees to your chest while lying on the floor, to more elaborate exercises involving swimming, walking, or moderate jogging to improve overall fitness and well being. Proper posture is always a helpful modification, especially for those that work long hours in an office.
